We only knew about seven continents of the earth; Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, North America, and Antarctica. But we need to revisit geography because scientists have discovered a new continent under the Pacific Ocean known as ZEALANDIA.
Introduction
The World encyclopedia, geography, and maps have determined that the world consists of 7 sub-continents. But the team of 11 researchers has proved this wrong that there is eight continent on the earth published in a recent paper.
“There are eight all, and the latest addition breaks the records, as the smallest, youngest, and thinnest in the world. It was thrust out from oceanic depth, hidden in plain sight along the water.
Background
In 1642, Abel Tasman (Dutch Sailor and penchant for rough justice) believed a vast continent existed in the Southern hemisphere. He condemned that he had discovered the great continent. He went for it and never came back.
Later in 2017, a team of geologists announced the headlines of Zealandia discovery which proved Tasman Right.
- Zealandia (Te-Rio-Maw Maori Language)
How is Zealandia called a Continent?
Zealandia fulfills all four requirements according to the continent definition defined by geology.
- High elevation relative to the surrounding area
- Distinctive geology
- Crust thicker compared with the surrounding ocean floor
- Well-defined area
According to geology’s terms, Continents are the earth’s most significant landmasses, covering both land and dry areas and the continental shelves.
And according to Zelandia’s founder and geologist, Zealandia is covering both dry land and rocks despite being submerged. Its crust comprises metaphoric and sedimentary rocks such as granite, schist, and limestone.
Size and Areas
- Separated from the great continent between 79 and 83 million years ago.
- It is submerged next to Australian territory, covering a land area of 4.9 million Km
- Zealandia includes Stewart Island, located on the South Island of New Zealand.
- The northern side of Zealandia is made up of New Caledonia (French-governed Islands)
- Zealandia has a bunch of mineral deposits, fossil fuels, and natural gas
